BioToph is a blind earthbender that acts as Aang's earthbending teacher.
Born blind into the wealthy Beifong family, Toph never had a problem seeing due to her unique ability to feel the vibrations in the earth. However, her parents as well as her earthbending master viewed her as weak and hopeless because of her disability. This led her to begin training on her own. After six years of honing her skills, she has become one of the most powerful earthbending masters in the world, even if few people are aware of her skills.
Toph's approach to others is similar to her approach to earthbending. Her years of earthbending have made her extremely tough and strong, and she expects the same from everyone she meets. Her self-confidence and pride in her abilities often come across as arrogance. She's brutally honest and blunt. She also possesses a sarcastic wit and doesn't hesitate to joke about her friends and enemies.
In combat, Toph uses the rare Southern Praying Mantis form of kung fu, making her an especially unique earthbender (all other earthbenders use the Hung Gar style). She is also a master of neutral jing, meaning that she prefers to wait for her opponents to make the first move and react accordingly.
Physical Description
Toph's most outstanding physical characteristic is her pale green eye color, indicating that she is blind. She is also very short (her official height is listed as 5'1", though she appears to be much shorter in the show). Her hair is black and usually in a bun with the bangs hanging messily around her eyes.
Her normal attire is a green robe with a brown vest and a green pair of pants that only reach down to below her knee. She is always barefoot, both because it is normal for an earthbender and because she needs the connection with the ground to see. Due to this, her feet are generally extremely dirty.

The proud, strong spirit of the Earth Kingdom embodies Earthbending, which uses the ground as a weapon against an opponent. Exceptionally muscular, Earthbenders use their strength to overpower opponents. To throw an enemy off balance, an Earthbender physically strikes the ground with his hands or feet, causing localized earthquakes. To dodge an attack, an Earthbender uses the earth as a catapult to buck his body high into the air, and then upon returning to the ground, he softens the earth, easing his landing. Additional moves include creating fissures as traps for enemies to fall in, and raising slabs of stone for defense and offense. An Earthbender attacks by levitating stones and then propelling them at his enemy. Earthbenders also possess the ability to 'magnetize' their limbs to stone, allowing them to scale shear walls and cliffs. A high level maneuver reduces solid ground to quicksand, providing a pitfall for approaching enemies. Earthbending's most significant weakness is its inability to manipulate man altered metals. Firebenders exploit this weakness by smelting metal to remove its natural impurities and then using it to construct armor, ships, and forts.
Metalbending
Toph alone possesses the ability to bend processed metals. Even after the purifying and refining process, metals still contain a trace amount of earth. Due to her earth-sense, Toph is able to target these impurities and manipulate the metal.
